Commercial Salting
And De-Icing
Ice forms between storms as often as during them. We treat lots, entrances and walkways on a schedule built around your site, with material rated for the temperature on the night it is applied.
Salting And Ice Control
Plowing clears the snow. Salting is what stops the thin layer left behind from bonding to the asphalt and turning into the ice that causes falls. The two go together, and salting is part of every snow contract we run.
We also treat between storms. A clear night after a thaw can freeze a lot solid without a flake of snow falling, so our crews patrol through freeze-thaw cycles and salt when the pavement temperature calls for it.
Every application is logged with the time, the area covered and the material used. Those records go in your file and are there if an insurer ever asks what was done and when.
When We Apply
Before The Storm
When the forecast allows it, we treat the lot ahead of the snow. A pre-treated surface stops snow bonding to the asphalt, which makes the plow pass cleaner and cuts the material needed afterwards.
During The Event
In long or wet storms, entrances, ramps and walkways are treated between plow passes so the high traffic areas never get a chance to glaze over.
After The Plow
Once the lot is cleared, the whole surface is treated. We then patrol through freeze-thaw and re-apply where meltwater has run across the pavement and refrozen overnight.

De-Icing Materials
Rock salt stops working long before an Ontario winter does. We carry several materials and match them to the pavement temperature and the surface being treated.
| Material | Where we use it | Effective to about |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk rock salt | Open parking areas, drive aisles and roadways. The standard material for most of the season. | −10 °C |
| Treated salt | The same areas in deep cold. Liquid-coated so it works colder, sticks where it lands and scatters less under traffic. | −18 °C |
| Brine, pre-applied | Sprayed before a forecast storm to stop snow bonding to the asphalt. Cuts the salt needed after the plow. | −9 °C |
| Calcium chloride | Entrances, dock aprons, stairs and problem ice. Works in the coldest conditions and melts fast. | −28 °C |
| Magnesium chloride | Walkways beside landscape beds and newer concrete, where we want the lowest impact on plantings and surfaces. | −15 °C |
| Sand and salt mix | Shaded corners, ramps and anywhere the temperature is below the working range of salt. Provides traction rather than melting. | Traction only |
Concrete poured within the last twelve months is treated with sand or magnesium chloride only. Tell us where the new work is and we will keep salt off it.
